Step-by-Step Guide to Making a Flemish Twist Bowstring
Step 1: Set Up Your String Jig
First, I created a simple string jig to make the process easier. It's made of two wooden blocks connected by a long piece of wood, allowing for adjustable lengths. I set the jig to the desired string length, which I previously measured.
Step 2: Cut the Dacron Material
Once the jig is set, I cut two lengths of the Dacron string—each should be roughly equal in length to your final bowstring length plus a few extra inches. For a 63” string, I cut two pieces at 66”.
Step 3: Create the Flemish Twist
With the two pieces of Dacron, I twist them together. I typically twist each string about 12 times per foot. So for a 63” string, I’m twisting about 6-7 feet in total. This process requires attention; too few twists can lead to a weak string, while too many can create a stiff, unyielding bowstring.
